A Team Approach for Diabetic Foot Problems

01-Dec-2011

Most people are aware that diabetes can lead to serious foot problems. The damage from diabetes includes blood vessel disease, nerve damage, structural problems with the foot, and susceptibility to infections. These problems can lead to serious infections, pain, disability, and ultimately limb loss. Treating or preventing these problems often requires diabetics to see multiple medical and surgical specialists.

Dr. Charles Kiell has played a key role in creating a "Diabetic Foot Program" in our community. This program encourages a team approach to treating diabetic foot problems, coordinating the efforts of experts in many fields such as radiology, podiatry & orthopedic surgery, infectious diseases, vascular surgery, and orthotics.

In a recent appearance on the Charlotte Today Show (WCNC Channel 36), Dr. Kiell discussed the philosophy of this team approach. "We think that allowing each practitioner to specialize just in what they do best, in a team setting where we all know what each other is doing, works best." Watch the full discussion below for more details.

The Diabetic Foot Program provides a simple way for people with foot problems related to diabetes to get the best care from the right experts working together in a coordinated, team approach.
