New Technology for Breast Cancer Saves Lives
26-Sep-2011
To help spread the word about new technology in the fight against breast cancer, Dr. Ken Parish made an appearance on the Charlotte Today show (WCNC, Channel 36).
Radiographic imaging is crucial for early detection and effective treatment of breast disease. Our center uses the latest digital mammography technique for breast examinations. This technology creates a high-resolution computer image instead of using film, producing a more detailed image of the breast tissue. Digital mammography also eases the sharing of a patient's images among all of the specialists who will contribute to the patient's treatment plan.
Breast MRI can also be used for the high risk patient, or to help obtain a more refined image of certain abnormalities picked up by other studies. Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) is a new simple test to help pick up on certain abnormalities that may be difficult to identify on mammogram. In many cases, BSGI may be even more sensitive than MRI in detecting certain breast diseases. These technological advances can help us to formulate an optimal plan of care for each individual.
Dr. Parish also talked about the importance of choosing an accredited Center of Excellence for breast care. Accreditation is a sign of our commitment to providing up-to-date, comprehensive care in a multidisciplinary setting that meets national standards of care.
